What to wear to an engagement party

So you have just been invited to an engagement party scheduled for next weekend and you have nothing to wear or you’re not really sure what is really suitable. So what does everyone else wear to an engagement party?

A good rule of thumb is to always check the invitation and location of where the party is been held and use some common sense. For example you definitely won’t walk into a fancy restaurant wearing a singlet, shorts and a pair of thongs. Suitable dress attire for each suitable situation is a must.

Some suggestions are:

  • If it is going to be held at a bar - smart casual
  • a restaurant - formal
  • at their home - casual

If your still not really sure, best solution is to just ask the hosts what would be appropriate or someone you know who is going as well, that way you won’t have any problems, won’t be dressed inappropriately and won’t be in an embarrassing situation where your the only one who is oddly dress out of a gathering of 20 people.

If you have doubts about been under dressed, most of time you are probably right so just follow your instincts, after all its better to be slightly over dressed than under dressed.

example of smart casualHelpful tip:

Formal wear is usually attire that looks professional and smart. Usually a suit, tie, black leather belt and leather shoes

Smart casual can be either jeans or khaki pants, along with a collar or buttoned shirt, this can also be accompanied by a tie

Casual is mostly clothing that is worn in an everyday environment e.g. shorts and t-shirt

Shop assistants can also be a valuable source of help, simply ask them for assistant and advise them of the occasion (be wary of shop assistants hard selling additional items)
